Migrant entrepreneurs
Description :
Entrepreneurship is a powerful driver of economic growth and job creation: it creates new companies and jobs, opens up new markets, and nurtures new skills and capabilities. Within the EU, migrants represent an important pool of potential entrepreneurs, but can face, as other more vulnerable groups, specific legal, cultural and linguistic obstacles. These issues need to be addressed in full to give support equitable to that received by all other entrepreneurial groups.

Migrant Entrepreneurship and Business Establishment Problems of Syrian Migrants
Description :
Gaziantep province was chosen as the study area. Gaziantep is one of Türkiye's leading cities, in terms of industry and trade. For this reason, it has extremely suitable conditions in terms of determining the general characteristics and human resources of Syrian immigrants in Türkiye and their integration. Since it is a city adjacent to the Syrian border, it has gained strategic importance as it is a city where people fleeing the political crisis in Syria took shelter in the camps there. In light of the data obtained in the study, it has been determined that immigrant entrepreneurs have problems with starting a business, problems with not having enough information about the institutional environment, problems arising from not having enough knowledge about laws and regulations, and problems with their perspective on immigrants.

Migration and its relationship withentrepreneurship
Description :
This article aims to establish the relationship between migration and entrepreneurship. It presents different studies carried out in recent years to analyse the main aspects that drive migrants to initiate entrepreneurial projects. It shows that many migrants turn to entrepreneurship as an alternative to achieve personal development, given the lack of opportunities in the receiving countries, mainly driven by the lack of employment. In addition, ethnic or cultural aspects, the level of education or human capital and the attitude towards risk are also influential factors in the decision to resort to entrepreneurship and can determine the success of entrepreneurship.

Description :
This publication analyses how Spain became an economic migrant-receiving country in the 1990s. Foreign workers, attracted by the country's economic boom, entered the labour market as salaried workers, with a lower rate of self-employment than Spaniards. The economic crisis increased the number of immigrant businesses, motivating the adoption of new strategies and confirming the resilience of these entrepreneurs.

SME and Entrepreneurship Policy in Ireland
Description :
This publication presents the findings of an OECD review of SME and entrepreneurship policy in Ireland. It assesses the challenges for SME and entrepreneurship development and offers recommendations for future policy. SMEs and entrepreneurs play a crucial role in the Irish economy, with SMEs accounting for more than 70% of employment. Attitudes to entrepreneurship are positive and SME innovation rates are high. However, SME productivity has not been increasing in recent years, business entry and exit rates are low and few Irish SMEs are directly engaged in exports. There is also untapped potential for entrepreneurship among women, youth and migrants, and variations across the country in SME and entrepreneurship performance. Ireland has a strong set of policies and programmes to address these challenges. The business environment is generally favourable, there are many best practice programmes for supporting high potential SMEs and entrepreneurs, and strong co-ordination of policies across government. At the same time, policies could be strengthened in areas such as growing productivity in medium-sized businesses, increasing the start-up rate, increasing exports, fostering enterprise networks and clusters, drafting a unified SME and entrepreneurship policy strategy document and strengthening the role of Local Enterprise Offices.

The Missing Entrepreneurs 2021Policies for Inclusive Entrepreneurship and Self-Employment
Description :
The Missing Entrepreneurs 2021 is the sixth edition in a series of biennial reports that examine how public policies at national, regional and local levels can support job creation, economic growth and social inclusion by overcoming obstacles to business start-ups and self-employment by people from disadvantaged or under-represented groups in entrepreneurship. It shows that there are substantial untapped opportunities for entrepreneurship in populations such as women, youth, the unemployed, and immigrants and highlights the need for more differentiated government entrepreneurship policies that respond to the specific barriers they face. The report includes an assessment of the impact of COVID-19 across these populations of entrepreneurs and the effectiveness of the policy response. It also contains thematic policy chapters on microfinance and leveraging the potential of immigrant entrepreneurs. These chapters present the range of current policy actions in EU and OECD countries and make recommendations for future policy directions. Finally, the report contains country profiles for each of the 27 EU Member States that identify for each county the major recent trends in entrepreneurship by women, youth, seniors and immigrants, the key policy issues and the recent policy actions.

Policy guide on entrepreneurship for migrants and refugees - 2018
Description :
This policy guide focuses on the role of entrepreneurship in enhancing the positive effects of migration on economic growth and development. It is a practical tool aimed at strengthening the humanitarian-development nexus urged by the World Humanitarian Summit in May 2016 and the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants adopted at the 71st United Nations General Assembly in September 2016. In order to inform policy decisions and programming, UNCTAD, IOM and UNHCR have put together their forces to provide a fact-based guide, highlighting the positive social, cultural and economic contribution that migrants and refugees can make to their home and host countries. This guide argues that entrepreneurship can be an effective way to include migrants and refugees in local economies, by sharing their knowledge and entrepreneurial spirit, and creating new market opportunities and cross-border networks.
