Non-Belgian Entrepreneurs in Belgium
Description :
In this study, UNIZO (Union of Independent Entrepreneurs of Flanders) has sketched out a quantified image of the phenomenon of non-Belgian entrepreneurs established in Belgium. UNIZO has long been interested in this group of entrepreneurs and first and foremost considers all these entrepreneurs of foreign origin as entrepreneurs. On the other hand, there are of course specific issues related to these entrepreneurs. In most cases, they have to face the fact that they are not natives of their host country or that they have another education.

Migrants entrepreneurs in Istanbul
Description :
Beyond being an economic value production, entrepreneurship is closely related to social, cultural and political dynamics, both in terms of the environment in which it takes place and the transformative mobility it generates. In recent years, the social/cultural dimension has come to the fore in entrepreneurship research and entrepreneurship has gained a sociological content. Some migrants have also become entrepreneurs, come with capital and have opened new migrant economies, value-added areas that can be called ethnic economies. When we look at the number of businesses and companies opened in Türkiye through migrant entrepreneurship, we see that there has been a significant increase with the Syrian migration. Considering this aspect of migration, the contributions of migrant entrepreneurs should be addressed frequently in order to contribute to the positive perception of migrants in the eyes of society. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with migrant entrepreneurs engaged in entrepreneurship activities in ten districts of Istanbul.

IMECE Project
Description :
IMECE Project, which is supported by Google and implemented by UNHCR in partnership with Habitat Association, aims to improve entrepreneurial capacities and employability of Syrian refugees in Türkiye by increasing digital skills. It aims to support the inclusion of refugees in the economy through a non-formal peer education, focusing on the use of technology in 14 cities. In the current digitalized world, individuals with digital competences have more opportunities of creating a livelihood for themselves. This is even more important for the refugee community who face disadvantages in the labour market and entrepreneurship ecosystem. Within this project, Habitat will implement the Google’s Maharat min Programme which is a digital skills training programme designed to help Arabic speakers, particularly young people and women, jump-start or advance their careers, get ready for future job opportunities or grow their businesses.

Migrant Entrepreneurs and the Digital Economy in the UK
Description :
The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate how migrant entrepreneurs in professional services manage their human capital to adapt, innovate and network. Most previous studies have focused exclusively on low-skilled migrant entrepreneurs, and research on migrants in professional services has been very limited. Looking at the different experiences of Nepalese migrant entrepreneurs in the UK, this study explores the transformation of their human capital related to their knowledge, experience and socio-cultural and economic capital in a quest for better businesses and improved lives to answer the following three questions: how migrant entrepreneurs in professional services can adapt their human capital to new host environments, how they transform their human capital to build innovation capacity for the digital age and how human capital relates to building a network for transnational and circular entrepreneurship

The Use of New Technologies by Migrant Entrepreneurs in Two European Cities: Perspectives for Understanding and Managing Diaspora Business and Resources
Description :
Over the last 40 years, the growth and implementation of new technologies (in particular, ICTs) have made it possible to instantly virtually cross national borders to establish, enjoy, and maintain social links. This also applies to migrant entrepreneurs, and even more so to transnational migrant entrepreneurs, i.e. migrants who carry out business activities in connection with other countries. Previous literature has frequently underlined the connection between ICTs and transnational business practices, albeit implicitly. However, few studies have focused on the role of new technologies in transnational business activities carried out by migrants. Based on the empirical evidence generated through 70 interviews with Moroccan transnational and domestic entrepreneurs living in Amsterdam and Milan, the chapter addresses this role, stressing that ICTs are most important for migrants running a transnational business. First, ICTs make it easier to start and develop the cross-border business, by helping to reduce both the necessary time and the financial costs; secondly, different forms of communication (synchronous vs. asynchronous) are used according to different purposes; finally, transnational entrepreneurs need constant physical mobility to make ICTs effective in business relations.

Leveraging immigrant entrepreneurship for job creation and growth
Description :
Immigrant entrepreneurship is diverse, ranging from small self-employment activities to businesses that operate in multiple countries. Traditionally policy support for immigrant entrepreneurship has focussed on supporting labour market integration through self-employment. However, the increasing skills levels of immigrants create an opportunity for governments to do more to attract and support immigrant entrepreneurs that have the potential to make significant impacts on the economy. This chapter discusses a range of emerging policy approaches such as start-up visa programmes, dedicated business incubation and accelerator programmes, as well as outreach and incentive programmes to attract high-potential immigrant entrepreneurs. Policy advice is provided for national, regional and local governments and is illustrated with good practice examples from European Union (EU) Member States and non-EU OECD countries.

Research: Why Immigrants Are More Likely to Become Entrepreneurs
Description :
We know that immigrants around the world are more likely to start companies than native-born populations but we have a limited understanding as to why. New research suggests personality-based self-selection — in particular, a propensity for risk-taking — may be a hidden driver. The findings have implications for investors, who might want to provide services tailored to the needs of migrant entrepreneurs, including visa and legal advice, and policy makers, who might want to extend support beyond the small group of later-stage international entrepreneurs who are usually the target of entrepreneurship visa programs and investment promotion agencies.

Better to start up: Why migrants often (have to) go this way
Description :
What do a desk in a hip co-working space, a perfumery and an exotic supermarket that lets consumers travel the world when they visit it have in common with Biontech, Tesla or Google? The founders have migration experience. The three large corporations and the three companies in Vienna stand for a phenomenon that can be observed worldwide. People with a migration biography are more eager to start up their own business and do so more often than "natives". Necessity is the mother of invention, they say. Migration does too, as our examples show.
